Young Scientists Explore the Science Behind the Game

Imagine a room full of curious kids, digital scales, sound level meter, and an array of pickleball equipment - this is how we turn learning into an adventure! Last week, the SRS Museum's Physics for Kids program took an exciting turn when Bob Fogle, Co-Director of the Southern Pickleball Academy, transformed the space into a junior science laboratory.

Bounce contest

The excitement was palpable as students were divided into Alpha and Omega teams, each embarking on a mission to uncover the hidden physics of pickleball. What started as a simple experiment quickly became an exploration of sports science. Armed with digital scales and keen observation skills, the young scientists began their investigation by weighing and counting the holes in indoor and outdoor pickleballs. They quickly discovered a difference between the two and added that information to their data sheets.

But the learning didn't stop there! The teams moved on to an even more fascinating challenge - testing different paddles and measuring the acoustic properties of their bounces. Wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and aluminum graphite composite paddles became tools of scientific discovery. A sound level meter captured every bounce, revealing unexpected differences between indoor and outdoor balls that had the kids buzzing with excitement.

The session culminated in a playful bounce challenge that brought out the competitive spirit in every young scientist. It was more than just a game - it was a lesson in physics, teamwork, and the pure joy of discovery. Who knew pickleball could be such a powerful tool for scientific exploration?

Southern Pickleball Academy believes learning can always be this fun. Science isn't just about numbers and measurements - it's about curiosity, exploration, and those magical moments when understanding suddenly clicks! We are grateful for the opportunity we had to share these discoveries with children at the SRS Museum in Aiken, SC.
